Dev Diwali In Varanasi 2025

Dev Diwali In Varanasi 2025

Dev Diwali or Dev Deepawali is a Hindu festival observed in the Hindu month of ‘Kartik’, celebrated with great pomp and show in the Indian city of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh. Dev Diwali is the ‘Festival of Lights of the Gods’ and falls on the Kartik Purnima (full moon day), fifteen days after the celebrations of Diwali. It corresponds to the month of November-December in the Gregorian calendar.

This religious ceremony is started by chanting of the holy Vedic mantras by the priests, lighting diyas at the ghats and the sparkling of fire crackers, to welcome and please the Gods and Goddesses.

Dev Diwali 2025 is on November 5

On the occasion of Dev Diwali, all the ghats of River Ganga is lighted with thousands of diyas and crowded with pilgrims. This utsav is celebrated every year in the holy city of Varanasi. The festivities can also be witnessed in Gujarat and other northern states of India. In the Indian state of Maharashtra, Dev Diwali is observed on the first day of the month of ‘Margashirsh’. Dev Diwali is commemorated to honour the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon named ‘Tripurasur’. For this reason, this festival is also known as ‘Tripurotsav’. The festival of Dev Diwali coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain light festival.

Rituals of Dev Diwali:

The main ritual of Dev Diwali is the lighting of diyas after seeing the moon. The steps of every ghats of River Ganga, right from southernmost Ravidas Ghat to Rajghat, are illuminated with millions of diyas lit in honour of Goddess Ganga and other presiding devas.

The devotees get up early on the day of Dev Diwali and perform the ‘Kartik snan’, that is a ritual of taking a dip in the holy Ganges). They perform ‘deepdan’ (offering oil lamps) in the honour of Goddess Ganga. Following this ‘Ganga aarti’ is performed by 24 Brahmin Priests along with 24 girls, with full devotion.

On this occasion of Dev Diwali, people decorate their houses with oil lamps. Colourful designs or rangoli are made on the front doors. In several houses in Varanasi, ‘Akhand Ramayana’ is organized along with offering bhogs.

In the evening, on the streets of Varanasi, huge processions of beautifully decorated deities are taken out with full enthusiasm. The night sky is lit up with the lights of the firecrackers. After the event, dance performances and cultural programmes by famous personalities of Varanasi also takes place.

Festivals in Kashi – A Spiritual Celebration Throughout the Year

Kashi (Varanasi) is one of the world’s oldest living cities and a timeless spiritual center. Known for its sacred ghats, temples, and rituals, Kashi celebrates a wide range of festivals throughout the year. Each festival reflects the city’s deep-rooted devotion, vibrant culture, and ancient traditions.

If you’re planning a visit to Kashi, timing it with one of these festivals will enhance your experience and connect you deeply with the city’s soul. Below is a list of the most important festivals celebrated in Kashi.

Dev Deepawali

Held on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali, Dev Deepawali is one of the most stunning festivals in Varanasi. All major ghats are lit with thousands of diyas (earthen lamps), creating a glowing canvas along the Ganges. Pilgrims offer prayers, and the evening Ganga Aarti becomes a divine visual experience.

Best experience: Take an evening boat ride along the ghats to see the illumination.

Maha Shivratri

Celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva, Maha Shivratri is one of the most important spiritual events in Varanasi. Devotees observe fasts, offer prayers, and stay awake through the night in devotion. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple becomes a center of activity, drawing thousands of pilgrims.

Highlight: Shiva Barat—a symbolic wedding procession of Lord Shiva—is a must-see event during this festival.

Ramlila of Ramnagar

The Ramnagar Ramlila is a month-long dramatic performance of the Ramayana, held every year during Sharad Navratri. It is considered one of the oldest and most elaborate Ramlilas in India and has even received recognition from UNESCO. The entire town of Ramnagar transforms into a living stage.

Tip: Plan in advance as the performances are spread across large areas and continue for over 30 days.

Holi and Masan Holi

While Holi in Kashi is as colorful and joyful as elsewhere, the unique tradition of Masan Holi sets Varanasi apart. Sadhus and locals celebrate with ashes in cremation grounds, symbolizing the acceptance of death and the celebration of life.

Unique experience: Witnessing this mystical and philosophical version of Holi is unforgettable.

Dhrupad Mela

A treat for music lovers, the Dhrupad Mela is a 5-day classical music festival held at Tulsi Ghat every February. Renowned vocalists and musicians perform live, reviving the ancient Dhrupad tradition under the open skies near the Ganges.

Recommendation: Attend an evening performance to experience the spiritual atmosphere of music by the river.

Ganga Mahotsav

Held annually in November, just before Dev Deepawali, Ganga Mahotsav is a cultural celebration that includes classical music, dance, boat races, and craft exhibitions. It honors the Ganga as not only a river but also a symbol of culture and life.

Why visit: It offers a beautiful blend of culture, heritage, and spirituality.

Nag Nathaiya

This festival is based on the legend of Lord Krishna defeating the serpent Kaliya. A dramatic reenactment is staged at Tulsi Ghat, where a young boy dressed as Krishna jumps into the Ganges from a Kadamba tree.

Highlight: The live performance is symbolic and attracts a huge crowd every year.

Buddha Purnima

Celebrated in Sarnath, near Varanasi, Buddha Purnima marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha. Devotees from around the world come to Sarnath for prayer ceremonies and processions.

Suggested activity: Visit Sarnath and participate in the peaceful celebrations and rituals.

Panchkroshi Yatra

This is a five-day pilgrimage around the sacred boundary of Varanasi, covering 108 temples over an 80-kilometer route. Devotees walk the entire circuit, stopping at different temples and spiritual sites along the way.

Significance: It is believed to bring spiritual purification and is considered highly meritorious.

Ganga Dussehra

Held in May or June, Ganga Dussehra celebrates the descent of the Ganges to Earth. Devotees take holy dips in the river, believing it cleanses all sins. The ghats are decorated, and special rituals are performed throughout the day.

Best time: Early morning at the ghats is ideal for experiencing the spiritual essence of the festival.

Conclusion

Kashi is a city of celebrations, where every festival is a spiritual journey. Whether it is the divine lights of Dev Deepawali, the dramatic legends of Ramnagar Ramlila, or the soul-soothing music of Dhrupad Mela—each festival reveals a different layer of Kashi’s eternal charm.

If you’re planning a visit to Varanasi, time it with one of these festivals for a truly transformative experience.
